This lesson is based on one of the recordings found at ELLLO (English Listening Lesson Library Online)
I use it in the Extension Program at Mannes College of Music. I only see the students for 2 hours a week, but want to introduce them to word order and Xwords.
Prepared for: Intermediate students with a fair amount of grammar, but low production ability
You need:
- a computer with sound and video
- Bad Day atThe Bank transcript, questions, and slot sheet 3 pages (enough copies for the class) Optional: do the slot sheet on the board. We don't have black boards at Mannes. The Bank - answers.doc
- The English Verb System in Two Pages (I give this to students to use as reference. In this lesson we study Xword / Verb matchups from this handout.)
The lesson is in Microsoft Word (compatibility mode). Feel free to adapt/plagiarize at will, but cite ELLLO.

Homework/follow-up: Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 on the ELLLO page.

The Bank
Joel:

1Hey Michelle.
Michele:
Hi
Joel:
2 You don’t look very happy. 3What happened?
Michele:
Oh well, 4I’m a little bit frustrated.
Joel:
5Why?
Michele:
Well 6 I went to the bank today, and I couldn’t communicate well because my Japanese wasn’t good enough, and the bank teller didn’t speak English.
Joel:
Uh huh. 7What were you trying to do?
Michele:
Well 8I’ve ordered a ticket to go to Australia, and I have to send the money to the travel agency, and they only accept one form of payment. 9 They want me to send a bank transfer.
Joel:
10OK
Michele:
So 11 I have a post office account and I can’t do it through the post office.12 So I went to the bank, and I started to explain that I wanted to send-do a bank transfer
Joel:
OK
Michele:
13 And because I’m a foreigner, I think she thought I wanted to send money abroad and she was saying, oh, sorry, you can’t do that here. 14 But I had to explain, “No, no. I just want to send it within Japan.” 15 But I don’t know. 16Because I don’t have an account at that bank, there was some sort of problem, and she wanted me to fill out a form, and I didn’t really understand it.
Joel:
17Then the form is in Japanese?
Michele:
18Yes. So now I have the form. 19 I guess I’ll have to go find a friend to help me fill it out.
Joel:
20 So you never solved the problem.
Michele:
21 No, no. I just took the form and said, OK, I ‘ll take it and come back.
Joel:
22 How long were you there?
Michele:
23 Umm, not too long, maybe five or ten minutes. 24 There weren’t many people in the bank, but I still felt like, “Oh I’m taking up too much time here or something
Joel:
25 So you just gave up and …
Michele:
26 Yes.
27 I’ll have to take you over to my landlord here. This Japanese woman. 28 She’s really nice and I’m sure she’ll help you fill out the form and take care of you
Michele:
29 Really? Oh that’s great.
